What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Also known as aesthetic dentistry, cosmetic dentistry refers to any procedures done to improve the appearance of gums, teeth and/or bite.

Its main focus is to improve the aesthetic appearance regarding colour, shape, size, position, alignment and general appearance of the smile.

Some like to use the term “Hollywood smile” when referring to what different cosmetic dentistry procedures can achieve.

It requires a high level of technical skill to carry out these procedures. With 20 years of experience behind him, Dr. Salie achieves incredible results and you will leave his chair with the smile of your dreams.

Different Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Teeth Whitening

A simple procedure aimed at restoring the natural whiteness of tooth enamel. This can resolve stains caused by smoking, poor oral hygiene, tea, coffee and alcohol.

This can be done either in-office or a take-home whitening kit can be used, depending on the causes and severity of the stains.

Our team of skilled dentists will gladly advise which method will be most appropriate for you and which is most suited to your budget.

Bonding

We use this treatment for teeth that are discoloured, chipped, misarranged or cracked and can also be used to close small gaps between the teeth.

Bonding uses a material which closely mimics the structure of teeth and is applied to the problem area before being sculpted into shape.

Once the correct shape has been achieved, it is then contoured and polished and blended in such a way that it is natural in appearance and invisible to onlookers.

Composite Fillings

Also known as white fillings, this is usually the preferred method for filling of teeth. This is because the material used can be customised to match the natural colour of the teeth.

Furthermore, with composite fillings, only the decayed area of your teeth needs to be removed before filling them.

The result far more aesthetically pleasing as a consistent finish is achieved.

Veneers

This is the method we use to repair more severe cases of uneven tooth alignment, chips, cracks, gaps or worn tooth enamel.

Veneers are custom made shells made from ceramic material which also mimics tooth enamel and thanks to modern advancements, provide a more natural look than previous years.

Little to no reshaping is required because veneers are by nature a thin material and for this reason, they are a more conservative option to full crowns.

Inlays / Overlays

The two terms are used interchangeably and refer to the restorative porcelain which is similar the veneers but are used to repair the back teeth.

This is a minimally invasive procedure, making them a better choice that crowns.

Crowns

Sometimes also called a cap, is our preferred solution for a tooth that is weakened due to an especially large filling or excessive decay.

Before we resort to removing the damage tooth, we can restore the tooth’s usefulness by significantly improving its strength through the use of a crown.

In some cases, if the decay has caused damage beyond what a filling can repair, a crown may be used.

The following are other reasons for a crown being the best option:

  • Reduction of teeth due to grinding
  • Post root canal procedures in order to strengthen the tooth
  • Cracked or fractured tooth where composite fillings may not be effective

Types of Crowns

  • Gold Crowns – Not discreet in appearance but significantly stronger than other options
  • Ceramic crowns – Discreet in appearance and relatively durable
  • Porcelain fused to metal – Visually discreet and highly durable

Dental Bridges

We use this method to replace missing teeth. It can be used for a single missing tooth or more than one in a row.

A special kind of dental “cement” is used to keep a bridge in place and for this reason, it's a long-lasting solution.

Generally speaking, bridges are made up of a false tooth which is attached to the neighbouring teeth by means of a crown.

The crowns are used to hold the false tooth firmly in place.

Types of Bridges

  • Porcelain fused to Zirconia structure
  • Porcelain fused to a metal structure
  • Maryland Bridge

Gum Contouring

Also known as gum reshaping. We use this treatment to improve the appearance of the teeth in cases where the gums cover too much of the teeth, making the teeth appear shorter than what they are.

Dental Implants

Arguably the most durable and effective restorative treatment for missing teeth, dental implants provide a stable foundation for the replacement teeth. Dental implants allow us to replace the root of a tooth with an artificial root upon which artificial yet natural looking teeth are placed.

Additionally, they preserve the bone structure of the jaw as well as the neighbouring teeth.
